What's Next?
Getting psyched for a month in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I'm heading down on Monday to explore, and to paint a new series of large canvas work for my solo-exhibition at POP Gallery (June 23 - July 25). YES!
2005 Flashback. Sticks & Bricks.
Here's a couple classics: Sticks & Bricks. Hyper-detailed compositions with multiple narratives. I had a lot of fun with these. I am currently brainstorming ways to pick up where I left off with this series. It's like a Sharpie doodle inside the computer. Last year I started getting all sorts of emails from people saying they loved the water bottles I designed. What water bottles?! Apparently there was a Faux-Designer out there jocking my fresh. It's happening quite a bit these days. It's wack when people straight steal your work. But honestly, I am more concerned with having people think I designed something that I didn't work on. Most of the time, the Faux-Vectorfunk is horrible.
Don't get me wrong, there are lots of Originators and Innovators out there pushing new ideas. It inspires me to work even harder when I see great original works by my contemporaries. But it stinks to see the results of Copy/Paste/Tweak. Especially when someone was paid to do it. Anyways, enough ranting for today. If you want my daily ranting, check My Twitter. 2004 Flashback. Surfing The Vaults.
I've been spending some time each day going through photos of my canvas paintings from 1999-2004 - 1 - 2 - 3 - and trying to get my head back in that zone. This was definitely my most prolific "painting" phase. The break away into "digital" was crucial, but this Summer I'm going back to analog and hoping all the ideas and techniques from each discipline will converge into great paintings. Stay tuned. MWM "Thus Far" Slideshow.
A lot of folks have been reaching out and asking if a video of my lecture at OFFF is online anywhere. It was filmed, but I am not sure if it is up yet, or if it will ever be. Instead of waiting, I've decided to share the slides from the lecture at my Flickr page. Honestly, I think it is better to let the art do the talking. Just imagine me nervously trying to explain what, when, how, and why I created this stuff. The presentation is chronological, starting with graffiti and murals, then canvas painting, then learning design software and using it for art, and then on to my annual analog B/W Series. The overarching theme is "Range Is Conducive To Growth." Enjoy :) MWM "Thus Far" Slideshow.
Logos. CNC Builders & Sole Fire.
I've had some fun projects this month designing logos. I really enjoy the challenge of identity work, and the explorations that take place prior to finalizing a mark. Generally, I create 5+ B/W options, then review with client and pick the best one to further explore, then explore color and finalize. It's an iceberg of work that only designers and clients can fully appreciate. Pictured here are a couple for CNC Builders and Sole Fire. Two very different companies, but the rules remain the same. Relevant. Impactful. Memorable. Unique. Click-Zoom.

Featured. One Day Book.
I have a bunch of work featured in Index Book's most recent offering: One Day (Curated by Emil Kozak). The hardcover weighs in at 252-pages and features work from dozens of international artists and designers. "One Day takes a comprehensive look at how graphics have entered our daily lives, and adorn everything from alarm clocks to skateboards. Not only do these graphics apply beauty, life and personality to our objects, but they also create a relationship with us, when they become part of the 'visual soundtrack' to our lives." Definitely top-shelf material. Check it. Order One Day Book.
Hex Series. Process Shot #3.
It's great to be home and back in my studio. My Hex Series is coming to life. I'd say I'm about 25% done on all eleven of them. Stay tuned for more process shots along the way. Lots of fun. Click-Zoom.

Good Times! OFFF Portugal.
I've just returned from Lisbon, Portugal after an amazing week-long vacation :) and attending & speaking at OFFF Oieras 3-Day Design Festival. It was epic. I've never been to such a massive event centered around digital design culture (3500+ Attendees). Everything was inspirational and informative, and Lisbon was a dream. Hopefully they post videos of presentations and the interactive installations. I'll upload my presentation slideshow soon so folks can see what I touched on in my 45 minute soapbox session. Good times all around. Great to hang with fellow KDU cats, the OFFF Team, and my wonderful guide Grace. Thank you! Looking forward to next year's festival.
