MWM X LERK : Shawnee Peak Mural Marathon.

5 long days braving the elements (It snowed last night) and 130 cans of spraypaint later... Our Mural Marathon at Shawnee Peak Snowboard Terrain Park is finally complete!
We were commissioned by Shawnee to paint murals on all of the different features in their popular terrain park. The Wall Ride, Down Rail, Rainbow Box, Whale Tail, A-Frame, and C-Boxes all got laced with our collaborative, layering process of vibrant abstract painting.
Lerk and I have collaborated on a bunch of stuff over the years, check this Highway Underpass we rocked on earlier this year.
Our process is truly a freestyle collaboration, with no blueprints or designated areas. Lots of different techniques. Click for Zooms.
For this project that included 16 large surfaces, we would work on our own stuff for a while and then moved on to a new spot. Once we had covered everything with abstract compositions, we went back around adding more layers on top of each others stuff.
The end result is a perfect example of 1 + 1 = 3. Super fun project!
Can't wait to shred this park in a few weeks the mountain opens.
SLIDESHOW : Big Photos of the end results, details, and process.

Cycles & Seasons : 2011 Calendar.

This was a really fun project! A few months back Manpower commissioned me to create a new series of abstract Vectorfunk artworks to for their 2011 Calendar. It was a dream job to work on (Thanks Susie), and especially fun to have the opportunity to flex on Spot Varnish techniques. *These calendars are not for sale. Manpower will be gifting them to their network and affiliates. But you can of course buy one of my B/W 2011 Calendars :)
Slideshow : Cycles & Seasons 2011 Series. Bright Possibilities!

Spot Varnish.

I recently had the pleasure of exploring various approaches of Spot Varnish on my Cycles & Seasons 2011 Series. Here are a couple examples of the Color Art + Spot Gloss. View Slideshow of all 12.
Instead of pulling direct shapes and hues from the color artworks for the clear coat, I intentionally made it interact in different ways. Some play with the initial form and others completely break the rhythm. It's fun when a shape gets varnish on part of it and ends up having multiple saturations of the original color.
Spot Varnish is one of those things that can really make a printed piece jump off the page. It costs more and takes a bit longer at the press, but it is definitely worth it in the end.
The result is hologram-esk depending on the light source and angle viewed. Check out the full series Here.

Asymmetry Branch.

What's Next? 3D Geo-Paintings.

Super excited to begin work on this new series of 3D Geo-Chunks. The project is a collaboration with my great friend Erik Flanagan. I commissioned him to actualize a fleet of wooden blocks in the style of my Crystals & Lasers and Parallel Universe canvas paintings.
I'll be painting detailed spraypaint formations and abstractions directly onto them. Creating moments of Optical Illusion where the natural light source and shadows are juxtaposed with implied shadows and insets within the artwork. Where the true angles pop out, the colorful artwork will fall back. Stay tuned!
