I'm currently out in Eden, Utah enjoying an artist residency with the good folks at SUMMIT on Powder Mountain. I will do a proper post in a couple weeks explaining the full process of this series and the explorations, in the studio and in the wilderness, that led me to the final results. Stay tuned for that. For now I share the first of a dozen mosaic mandalas created from 100% local elements I foraged on the mountain during day hikes. Mandalas ( 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 ) have been a reoccurring theme in my work all along. This series is a lot of fun as it overlaps many interests and discoveries and allows me to catch some rays, scope wildlife, and work with my hands. Kinda like painting with mother nature's paintbrush.



The key is to drink enough coffee to be focused, but not too much and get a shaky hand.

"The Rincon Valley Charter Schools (RVCS) are part of the Rincon Valley Union School District here in Santa Rosa, California. Maybe it's the bright culture we live in, but there has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the bold artwork that has been created. Many have asked where the ideas came from. "The mural with the Gryphon (school mascot) was painted by the 7th grade mural club at our newest school campus, the Rincon Valley Charter School at Matanzas. 12 amazing kids met over the course of three weeks to paint outside of school time."
 

"The mural with the profile was painted by my 18, 8th grade art students as their "Legacy Project." Every year the students make something to leave to the school before they journey off to high school. This group was chosen to create their mural outside of the art room, at the Rincon Valley Charter School, Sequoia."
 

"The most simple mural (with only geometric shapes in warm and cool colors) was done by 63, 6th graders from Sequoia Elementary School, a neighboring campus to RVCS where I work. I am not their teacher, but led them for this project. It was thrilling to see their eyes light up at what they collaborated on and helped create."
