Graphic Endeavors.

Graphic Endeavors.

Here's a little palette refresh after a steady queue of black and white here on the blog ... Last week I was commissioned to create this hyper detailed Vectorfunk configuration in full spectrum color for a special project in The Netherlands. It's always interesting to learn how projects find their way to me. This particular collaboration sailed in on the back of These Posters I designed way back in 2006 while I was still in art school. That is a good feeling. Stay tuned for the full story.

B & W Series : All Of The Above.

B & W Series : All Of The Above.

Working my way through a checklist of different ways to make shades of grey with solid black ink. Chessboard, Topography Map, Crosshatching, Op-Art Stripes, Stippling, Etc. Not entirely thrilled with the final result of this drawing, but it was a good exercise for me to determine what techniques work well and which can be adjacent to one and other without blending when viewed from a distance.

B & W Series : All Of The Above.

The end goal of these studies is to become more fluent in one color graphic illustration.
      B & W Series : All Of The Above.

I hope to reach a point where I can render many different shades so that when the work is viewed at different distances it has a totally different vibe. A combo of Xylography / Magic Eye / Op-Art.

B & W Series : Cursive Tornado.

Pleased with how this one turned out. Lots of flow. Stippled greyscale. Plenty of dots.

B & W Series : Cursive Tornado.

Same format and supplies as the rest of series thus far. Black ink on 65x50cm watercolor paper.

B & W Series : Cursive Tornado.

My 15 second sketch. Glad I decided on stippling instead of checkerboard for the grey.

Minimo Graph Interview.

Minimo Graph Interview.

A few weeks back I did this in-depth Interview With Minimo Graph about the evolution of my work across disciplines over the past 5 years. The interview focuses on 6 different groups of work in chronological order and our discussion makes links from one to the next. Much thanks to Jordan who runs Minimo Graph. It is a well curated website with thoughtful commentary. Definitely bookmark worthy. I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on past works and elaborate on my goals for the future. B & W Series : Aquatic Baroque.

I drew this groovy one with the intention of making some Rorschach Remixes. It worked quite well.

It's always such a surprise to see stuff jump out of an unplanned pattern like this. What do you see ?

B & W Series : Piano Keys & Breakbeats.

B & W Series : Piano Keys & Breakbeats.

The most detailed of this series yet. Really starting to sync with the Organic Murals I have been painting these recent years. This one really feels like music to me. Choice listening – Pretty Lights.

B & W Series : Piano Keys & Breakbeats.

And when it gets mirrored, reflected, and tiled ... This one works well due to it's asymmetrical balance.

B & W Series : Sonar Eclipse.

B & W Series : Sonar Eclipse.

Having a great time experimenting with this new series. Focused freestyle. Modifying the formula a little bit from one drawing to the next. I have always aligned with the "more is more" ideology regarding experimentation and a somewhat scientific approach to creating a series of artwork that is unified and cohesive, but also diverse and varied within a defined set of perimeters. Choose your own adventure.

B & W Series : Spaceshot Skyhook.

B & W Series : Spaceshot Shyhook.

Another from this new series. Although it is a totally non-objective abstraction, once I finished inking it and took a few steps back the form and balance of this one really remind me of the classic Kareem Abdul Jabbar maneuver : The Skyhook. Lots of letterformations jumping out as well. On to the next one ...

New Black & White Series : Organic Geometry.

New Black & White Series : Organic Geometry.

I've begun Chapter # 9 of my annual Black & White Series. They are larger format (this one is 50 x 65 cm) than Last Year thanks to my workspace being larger this year. Many of the ideas and forms I will incorporate into these drawings are further explorations of the Organic Flow and Op-Geo that I've been celebrating in my recent Murals and Canvas Paintings. As always, I've decided to switch it up with the materials I am using. The series from the last 6 Winters each had their own way of achieving the spectrum of greyscale (wet ink washes, crosshatching, checkerboard, pointillism, and all sorts of other patterns). It has been 7 years since Series # 2, the last time I focused on only pure black ink on white paper. Back to the simple and timeless world of Pencil + Eraser + Sharpies.

New Black & White Series : Organic Geometry.

Some key concepts I have front-of-mind going into this new series are : scale, pacing, negative space, and implied depth. One of my natural tendencies when I am making a drawing/painting/mural is to take over the entire space. In this new work I am trying to push myself out of this way of thinking and create more distinct shifts of complexity and refrain from reaching the edges of the paper, allowing the voids to create an overall sense of balance. Stay tuned for more.

Knot Theory : Glyph Cue – Winter 13/14.

One last preview from our next collection. This one takes the form of am interlocking double GG and CC infinity knot. It also resembles a subway map maze of an imaginary future city. Stay Tuned.

Always good to spill the idea onto paper first to see if it works the way I imagine. Another fun one to design.

Navigation iconography, sundial, compass rose, longitude/latitude, there's even a spider web in there.

Sailor Syntax : Glyph Cue – Winter 13/14.

Another preview from our next collection. Nautical Flags arranged in a G L Y P H C U E diamond with a Square Knot in the center for good measure. The idea for this design has been on my brainstorm list for years so it's nice to finally actualize it.

Next I will find a way to get all Kryptos within my mural blueprints using this clever International Code.

Island Time : Glyph Cue – Winter 13/14.

You could say I am a bit fashionably late on GLYPH CUE Fall 2013 ... So now, it is a Winter collection :) Here's a preview of one of our new designs. This collection focuses on nautical lore and navigational iconography. Fun stuff to research and swim around in.
