CAP #122. "Promote Yourself."

I designed the cover for this month's Computer Arts Projects Magazine. The issue's theme is self-promotion, so we went for a wild type-jam of "Promote Yourself." This was a lot of fun for me, and a huge honor. Also in this issue is a great interview with SF's Benny Gold about building brands/PR, design from Montreal's notorious 123klan, and a feature on the legendary Global Set known as Pentagram. And much more. An epic issue. Grab a copy! Click-Zoom.
I also did a bit of a play-by-play recap of my scrambled design process for their "Behind The Scenes" Section. Can you spot my logo in the cover? Oh, the irony. Haha! I couldn't resist. Click-Zoom.

Sugarloaf 58°F. Mashed Potatos.

Caught some serious Spring snowboarding over the weekend at Sugarloaf. Great snow coverage and warm enough to shed layers and catch a sunburn. After braving the coldest of cold this season, it was refreshing to shred without any risk of frostbite. Good times!

Caleb Neelon's Book Of Awesome.

Just got an awesome pack in the mail from Caleb Neelon. A signed copy of his new book and a grip of stickers from international graffiti legends. Psyched! I met Caleb a few weeks ago in Boston at C&P. Immediately afterwards I mailed him a bunch of my recent books and prints (as I always do when I meet people I look up to). He reciprocated in a major way. This book is truly Awesome. "Murals, Gallery Installations & Street Paintings from All Over The Place". Big UP bro. Keep up the great work! What might this be?

Just received this enormous package from St. Petersburg, Russia... and I was stumped. All sorts of foreign languages and curious stamps. And then I opened it. Oh yeah, the Sweet Content 2009 Calendar (My art is August). Looks great. It's huge (18" x 24") and beautifully printed. I am honored to be featured alongside many of my contemporary Art/Design idols. Thanks guys. Спасибо, ребята. Выглядит здорово!

[S] Alphafont 3.0

My friend Jeff just hit me with an email to let me know that my books arrived, and the "S" in Alphafont 3.0 is his favorite letter. Sometimes with this style of design (and the way I often present it), it can be hard to see each piece for what it is. That's why the "Unbound Print Set" is so handy. Take your time with each letter, and spell out anything you want right on your wall. Preview Alphafont 3.0, and if you dig it, Grab a copy.

Swinging Brushes.

Last night I got together with longtime friend Kate Cleaves to start working on our collaborative painting series. We got rocking on the first layer on 10 different panels. Here are a couple fun moments thus far. Stay tuned for the evolution. Click-Zoom.

MWM X PSFK Poster.

Last week I had the pleasure of collaborating with PSFK on this XL-Poster for the PSFK|NYC Conference on April 2nd. I had fun getting geo-abstract with it, while still maintaining the info-design objective. Good times! Looking forward to the Conference. I'll be presenting my work, and will have a table set up with my recent books and posters. Hope to see you there! Click-Zoom.

Cut & Paste Boston. 2D Design Winner.

I competed in the Boston stop of the Cut & Paste World Tour last night. There were three categories: 2D, 3D, Motion. I rocked out in 2D, and won it! (The theme was "Saint Patrick's Day Poster". Without using the color green. Completed in 15 minutes. From scratch.) So now I'll be heading to the Global Championship in New York in a couple months. More photos and video from Boston will be up on the C&P website soon. For now, check out these iPhone pics. It was a lot of fun. Great to meet fellow designers, the C&P crew, and the judges. Good times at Good Life afterwards too. Still feeling it. Click-Zoom.

The Zone Expansion.

After months of pretending my painting studio was in my living room "temporarily", I decided to just go for it. Tarps on the floor and milk-crate skyscrapers. Better natural light too. Why? Because the biggest room in my house should be more than a hallway. Click-Zoom.

Speaking at PSFK|NYC.

Very excited to announce that I'll be presenting my work at this year's PSFK|NYC Conference on April 2nd. Piers asked me to put together a presentation that explores the simultaneous evolution of my two signature styles, "Monochrome Analog" and "Full Color Digital". Can't wait! PSFK is one of my favorite websites, and the conferences they put together are epic. Check the Videos of previous events. Scoop a Ticket while available. And be prepared to be inspired by heavy-hitting, rule-breaking, innovation-oriented, forward-thinking folks.

Featured. 400ml Book & Tour.

The 400ml Book that one of my 2005 Painted Spraypaint Cans is featured in arrived yesterday. Looks great! It is pretty amazing to see what 400 artists came up with while using an empty spraypaint can as their canvas. More Info & Buy Book.

Prior to Fun.

Some friends have this idea in their head that when I am in my painting studio, I'm rocking out to tunes, spliff and coffee in one hand, paintbrush in the other. While this very situation might happen from time to time ;) there is a whole lot of "work" that goes into building/prepping for a canvas painting. Especially when it is hand-stretched canvas (*like the colored denim hexagon series I am currently working on). After stretching 10 canvases, my arms feel like I've been pulling lobster traps out of The Bay all day long. Sure, you can buy pre-stretched, pre-primed canvases at the art store. But, as the saying goes "If you want it done right. Do it yourself." So true. Stay tuned for the evolution of this series.

2003 Flashback. Student Work.

While scouring my external hard-drive for a document with Pantone mix ratios, I came across this poster I designed 6 years ago as a student. It is a bit embarrassing to show now, but the content is rad! Just try and ignore my design sensibility, typography choices, layout, massive signature... pretty much everything. Pay attention to the "info" not the "info-design". It is instructions on how to mix your very own "DIY Custom Spraypaint Colors". And yes, it definitely does work. I have personally made over 100 different hues. Everything from metallic pink (silver + pink), to almost-clear-blue (gloss + a hint of royal), and a dozen shades of grey (a range not available through any manufacturer). It is also a great way to augment cheapo paint. More bang for your buck, ya dig? *Warning: Wear goggles, gloves, and be prepared to not get the deposit back on your apartment. Click-Zoom.

Speaking at OFFF Portugal.

And the frequent flyer points just keep adding up! I just confirmed with the good folks at OFFF Lisbon. I'll be attending and presenting my work at this year's festival in May. Super excited! I have heard great things about the conference and the city of Lisbon. We are also trying to line up an onsite mural during the festivities. Can't wait. Click through the link to see what OFFF is all about.

My Line! Glyph Cue S/S 09.

I am VERY pleased to announce, after months (pronounced: years) in the making, my clothing line Glyph Cue is almost ready. In true blog-tease-hype fashion, we (MWM & Sirky) have decided to give a little taste of tonight's test print session at The Arm Factory here in Portland, Maine. Full line of 8 tees, mission statement, website, online store, and stockist list coming soon. Stay tuned! Click-Zoom.

Cut & Paste Boston.

I'll be rocking at Cut & Paste Boston this Saturday. I have always been curious about this Global Design Challenge (Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Oregon, Boston, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Milan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney). It's pretty much a digital art battle. You get a theme, they set the clock, and competitors whip up a super fast rendering inspired by the theme. Then everyone parties. Sounds fun. Wish me luck.

Interviewed. Dazed & Confused UK.

While in London I caught up with KDU homie Terence Teh from Dazed & Confused. We chopped it up about my exhibition, client work VS. personal work, originals VS. prints, my goals to be the Bo Jackson of art, and my plans for 2009. Dazed is one of my favorite magazines. Thanks guys! Check Terence out at the notorious Affiliates Studios. Read Interview online here: MWM|Dazed Interview.

DVD Packaging. Rewind.

A few months back I had the pleasure of working with my friend Brian Solano of BS Productions on packaging for his mega-compilation REWIND. The DVD features today's best rock climbers (Joe Kinder, Dave Graham, Jason Kehl, Emily Harrington, Chris Linder, and more) over the past 7 years across the globe. The movie is epic. Even someone who has never climbed will be pumped to try it after watching this highlight reel. Great work Brian and crew. It was a blast working on this with you guys! Watch the clip. Grab a copy.
